QuickDoc - Short introduction to VesaDPMS Pro
On second thought, this documentation is sufficient. Make it a "Full
introduction to VesaDPMS Pro" !
This is the second version of a more flexible DPMS blanker than the existing
ones (MCP and CGXDPMS).
Not another one, you may think, but I really needed one: somewhere in
between my CyberGraphX/monitor combination lies a nasty misinterpretation
of the DPMS blanking modes.
The suspend command switches off and vice versa ! All known blankers assume
the normal blanking order, so I had to skip either suspend or off mode to
make them work.
VesaDPMS allows free combinations of the DPMS mode order just by setting
different blanking times. Btw., that's why I call it "Pro" - it is more
useful than the others.
PREFACE
-------
This program is not yet complete. It reasonably works for now. Depending on
YOUR feedback, I will continue working on it, or dump it. To make it easier
for you, I release it as Mailware: If you use it, (e-)mail me !
I've had some conversation with MCPs author. Maybe VesaDPMS becomes obsolete
soon. Sorry for you, then, but I prefer MCP.
INSTALLING
----------
Just unpack the archive, which you already did, as you are reading this doc.
Copy the program to a place you think that is useful - WBStartup is ok.
STARTING
--------
Before you doubleclick, you should set some tooltypes. The following are
supported:
WINDOW: Specify the console for error output (not required, but useful)
CONSOLE: Same as WINDOW
CX_PRIORITY: Set the commodity priority of VesaDPMS (not required)
CX_POPUP: Set it to "no" to suppress the popping up of user interface at
startup. Leave it "yes" for now, to set the parameters.
PREFERENCES: Filename of the program's preferences.
Default is "SYS:Prefs/Presets/VesaDPMS.prefs".
You could also set it to "ENVARC:Blanker.prefs" or whatever
you like.
MAKE SURE, YOU DO NOT OVERWRITE AN EXISTING FILE. VesaDPMS DOES NOT CHECK
THIS !!!
From Shell, you can use the same keywords. Type "VesaDPMS ?" to see the
template.
IMPORTANT: You must supply a stack of at least 8000 bytes !!!
=============================================================
The default hotkey for popping up the user interface is "Ctrl v", the hotkey
for immediate blanking is "Ctrl b". You can change them, when you pop up the
user interface.
Here you can also change the standby, suspend and off mode. You can switch
it off and on, and set the time until blanking (in seconds). You can also
activate some switches, that influence the behaviour of VesaDPMS.
Mouse: If switched off, ignores mouse events during blanking
Disk: If switched on, VesaDPMS wakes up, when a disk is inserted or
removed
Tablet: Support for graphics tablets - listens to NEWPOINTERPOS events.
This should also work for lightpens. Has someone tested this ?
Switch: If you own a 15 kHz multisync and sometimes use Amiga screen modes,
enable this gadget to switch a CyberGraphX screen to front before
blanking.
By the way, you MUST start VesaDPMS on a CyberGraphX screen, or it will fail
and print out an error message.
The buttons "Save", "Use", "Cancel" and "Quit" do, what they say. ;^)
One remark: "Save" also saves the actual window position to disk, "Use"
forgets it, if you quit the program, and "Cancel" doesn't even care about
it.
DEINSTALLING
------------
Delete VesaDPMS and the prefs-file.
For a complete understanding, the source code is included. It is useless for
you, if you want to recompile it, but maybe you want to learn (or laugh...).
